RESUMO

Photocatalytic disinfection is a promising technology with low cost and high efficiency. However, most of the current studies on photocatalytic disinfection ignore the widespread presence of natural organic matter (NOM) in water bodies, so the incomplete conclusions obtained may not be applicable. Herein, this paper systematically studied the influence of humic acid (HA), one of the most important components of NOM, on the photocatalytic inactivation of bacteriophage f2 with electrospinning Cu-TiO2 nanofibers. We found that with the addition of HA, the light transmittance of the solution at 550 nm decreased from 94 to 60%, and the band gap of the photocatalyst was increased from 2.96 to 3.05 eV. Compared with reacting without HA, the degradation amount of RNA of f2 decreased by 88.7% after HA was added, and the RNA concentration increased from 1.95 to 4.38 ng·µL-1 after the reaction. Hence, we propose mechanisms of the effect of HA on photocatalytic disinfection: photo-shielding, passivation of photocatalysts, quenching of free radicals, and virus protection. Photo-shielding and photocatalyst passivation lead to the decrease of photocatalyst activity, and the reactive oxygen species (ROSs) (·OH, ·O2-, 1O2, H2O2) are further trapped by HA. The HA in water also can protect the shape of phage f2 and reduce the leakage of protein and the destruction of ribonucleic acid (RNA). This work provides an insight into the mechanisms for the influence of HA in photocatalytic disinfection process and a theoretical basis for its practical application.

Ex vivo liver resection combined with autologous liver transplantation offers the opportunity to treat otherwise unresectable hepatobiliary malignancies and has been applied in clinic. The implementation of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program improves the outcome of surgical procedures. This is a retrospective single-center study including 11 cases of patients with liver cancer that underwent autologous liver transplantation and received ERAS: cholangiocarcinoma of the hilar region (n = 5), intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (n = 3), gallbladder cancer (n = 1), liver metastasis from colorectal cancer (n = 1), and liver metastasis from gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumor (n = 1). There were no deaths within 30 days and major complications occurred in two patients, and four patients were readmitted upon the first month after the surgery. Median hospital stay was 20 days (range 13-44) and median open diet was Day 4 (range 2-9) after surgery and median early post-operative activity was Day 5 (range 2-9) after surgery. In conclusion, autologous liver transplantation is feasible in the treatment of otherwise unresectable hepatobiliary malignancies, and our study showed favorable results with autologous liver transplantation in ERAS modality. ERAS modality provides a good option for some patients whose tumors cannot be resected in situ and offers a chance for rapid recovery.

BACKGROUND: Extra spindle pole bodies-like 1 (ESPL1) is known to play a crucial role in the segregation of sister chromatids during mitosis. Overexpression of ESPL1 is considered to have oncogenic effects in various human cancers. However, the specific biological function of ESPL1 in endometrial cancer (EC) remains unclear. METHODS: The TCGA and GEO databases were utilized to assess the expression of ESPL1 in EC. Immunohistochemistry was utilized to detect separase expression in EC samples. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox regression analysis were performed to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic significance of ESPL1 in EC. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) was employed to explore the potential signaling pathway of ESPL1 in EC. Cell proliferation and colony formation ability were analyzed using CCK-8 and colony formation assay. RESULTS: Our analysis revealed that ESPL1 is significantly upregulated in EC, and its overexpression is associated with advanced clinical characteristics and unfavourable prognostic outcomes. Suppression of ESPL1 attenuated proliferation of EC cell line. CONCLUSION: The upregulation of ESPL1 is associated with advanced disease and poor prognosis in EC patients. These findings suggest that ESPL1 has the potential to serve as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in EC, highlighting its significance in the management of EC patients.

Genes encoding the KDM5 family of transcriptional regulators are disrupted in individuals with intellectual disability (ID). To understand the link between KDM5 and ID, we characterized five Drosophila strains harboring missense alleles analogous to those observed in patients. These alleles disrupted neuroanatomical development, cognition and other behaviors, and displayed a transcriptional signature characterized by the downregulation of many ribosomal protein genes. A similar transcriptional profile was observed in KDM5C knockout iPSC-induced human glutamatergic neurons, suggesting an evolutionarily conserved role for KDM5 proteins in regulating this class of gene. In Drosophila, reducing KDM5 changed neuronal ribosome composition, lowered the translation efficiency of mRNAs required for mitochondrial function, and altered mitochondrial metabolism. These data highlight the cellular consequences of altered KDM5-regulated transcriptional programs that could contribute to cognitive and behavioral phenotypes. Moreover, they suggest that KDM5 may be part of a broader network of proteins that influence cognition by regulating protein synthesis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the utility of pretreatment DKI parameters and serum SCC-Ag in evaluating the early therapeutic response of cervical cancer to radiotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 33 patients diagnosed with cervical cancer, including 31 cases of cervical squamous cell carcinoma and two cases of adenosquamous carcinoma, participated in the study. All patients underwent conventional MRI and DKI scans on a 3T magnetic resonance scanner before radiotherapy and after ten sessions of radiotherapy. The therapeutic response was evaluated based on the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) version 1.1. Patients were categorized into a response group (RG), comprising Complete Remission (CR) and Partial Remission (PR), and a non-response group (NRG), comprising Stable Disease (SD) and Progressive Disease (PD). LASSO was employed to select pretreatment DKI parameters, and ROC curves were generated for the selected parameters and serum SCC-Ag. RESULTS: Significant differences were observed in pretreatment MD, Da, Dr, MK, Ka, Kr, and SCC-Ag between the RG and NRG groups (P < 0.01). However, no significant differences were noted for FA and FAK (P = 0.441&0.928). The two selected parameters (MD and MK) demonstrated area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity of 0.810, 0.769, 0.850 and 0.827, 0.846, 0.750, respectively. The combination of MD and MK exhibited an improved AUC of 0.901, sensitivity of 0.692, and specificity of 1.000, with a higher Youden index compared to the individual parameters. Conversely, the AUC, sensitivity, and specificity of the combination of MD, MK, and SCC-Ag were 0.852, 0.615, and 1.000, with a Youden index of 0.615. CONCLUSION: Pretreatment MD, MK, and SCC-Ag demonstrate potential clinical utility, with the combined application of MD and MK showing enhanced efficacy in assessing the early therapeutic response of cervical cancer to radiotherapy. The addition of SCC-Ag did not contribute further to the assessment efficacy.

Numerous imaging techniques are available for observing and interrogating biological samples, and several of them can be used consecutively to enable correlative analysis of different image modalities with varying resolutions and the inclusion of structural or molecular information. Achieving accurate registration of multimodal images is essential for the correlative analysis process, but it remains a challenging computer vision task with no widely accepted solution. Moreover, supervised registration methods require annotated data produced by experts, which is limited. To address this challenge, we propose a general unsupervised pipeline for multimodal image registration using deep learning. We provide a comprehensive evaluation of the proposed pipeline versus the current state-of-the-art image registration and style transfer methods on four types of biological problems utilizing different microscopy modalities. We found that style transfer of modality domains paired with fully unsupervised training leads to comparable image registration accuracy to supervised methods and, most importantly, does not require human intervention.

Citronella and Nutmeg are two common spices used for seasoning and medicinal purposes, both of which have significant economic value. This study aimed to investigate whether Citronella essential oil and Nutmeg essential oil (NEO) can ameliorate monosodium urate (MSU)-induced gouty arthritis in rats and the potential mechanisms. The results showed that CEO and NEO reduced swelling and redness at joint sites, inhibited neutrophil infiltration, and limited proinflammatory mediator secretion in mice with MSU-induced gouty arthritis. Based on the results of network pharmacology, molecular docking, and western blotting, CEO and NEO may exert anti-gouty arthritis effects by reducing the expression of reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress and downregulating the phosphorylation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway, thereby inhibiting the production of the NLRP3 inflammasome and inhibiting the production of inflammatory cytokines. Therefore, these two essential oils show potential for use as adjuvant treatments for gouty arthritis in specific aromatherapy products or food seasonings.

Increasing amounts of solid waste and sludge have created many environmental management problems. Pyrolysis can effectively reduce the volume of solid waste and sludge, but there is still the problem of heavy metal contamination, which limits the application of pyrolysis in environmental management. The intercalated-exfoliated modified vermiculite (IEMV) by intercalators of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide were used to control the release of Cd, Cr, Cu, Zn and Pb during pyrolysis process of sludge or solid waste. The retention of heavy metals in sludge was generally better than that in solid waste. The IEMV by octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide as the intercalator calcined 800 °C (STAB-800) was the best additive for heavy metal retention, and the retention of Cr, Cu and Zn was significantly better than that of Pb and Cd. Cr, Cu, Zn and Pb were at low risk, while Cd had considerable risk under certain circumstances. New models were proposed to comprehensively evaluate the results of the risk and forms of heavy metals, and the increasing temperature was beneficial in reducing the hazards of heavy metals by the addition of STAB-800. The reaction mechanism of heavy metals with vermiculite was revealed by simulation of reaction sites, Fukui Function and Frontier Molecular Orbital. Thermal activation-intercalated-exfoliated modified vermiculite (T-IEMV) is more reactive and had more active sites for heavy metals. Mg atoms and outermost O atoms are the main atoms for T-IEMV to react with heavy metals. The Cr, Cu and Zn have better adsorption capacity by T-IEMV than Pb and Cd. This study provides a new insight into managing solid waste and sludge and controlling heavy metal environmental pollution.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a human tumor virus associated with a variety of malignancies, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma, gastric cancers, and B-cell lymphomas. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modifications modulate a wide range of cellular processes and participate in the regulation of virus-host cell interactions. Here, we discovered that EBV infection downregulates toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) m6A modification levels and thus inhibits TLR9 expression. TLR9 has multiple m6A modification sites. Knockdown of METTL3, an m6A "writer", decreases TLR9 protein expression by inhibiting its mRNA stability. Mechanistically, Epstein-Barr nuclear antigen 1 increases METTL3 protein degradation via K48-linked ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Additionally, YTHDF1 was identified as an m6A "reader" of TLR9, enhancing TLR9 expression by promoting mRNA translation in an m6A -dependent manner, which suggests that EBV inhibits TLR9 translation by "hijacking" host m6A modification mechanism. Using the METTL3 inhibitor STM2457 inhibits TLR9-induced B cell proliferation and immunoglobulin secretion, and opposes TLR9-induced immune responses to assist tumor cell immune escape. In clinical lymphoma samples, the expression of METTL3, YTHDF1, and TLR9 was highly correlated with immune cells infiltration. This study reveals a novel mechanism that EBV represses the important innate immunity molecule TLR9 through modulating the host m6A modification system.

BACKGROUND: Noninvasively and accurately predicting subcarinal lymph node metastasis (SLNM) for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains challenging. This study was designed to develop and validate a tumor and subcarinal lymph nodes (tumor-SLNs) dual-region computed tomography (CT) radiomics model for predicting SLNM in NSCLC. METHODS: This retrospective study included NSCLC patients who underwent lung resection and SLNs dissection between January 2017 and December 2020. The radiomic features of the tumor and SLNs were extracted from preoperative CT, respectively. Ninety machine learning (ML) models were developed based on tumor region, SLNs region, and tumor-SLNs dual-region. The model performance was assessed by the area under the curve (AUC) and validated internally by fivefold cross-validation. RESULTS: In total, 202 patients were included in this study. ML models based on dual-region radiomics showed good performance for SLNM prediction, with a median AUC of 0.794 (range, 0.686-0.880), which was superior to those of models based on tumor region (median AUC, 0.746; range, 0.630-0.811) and SLNs region (median AUC, 0.700; range, 0.610-0.842). The ML model, which is developed by using the naive Bayes algorithm and dual-region features, had the highest AUC of 0.880 (range of cross-validation, 0.825-0.937) among all ML models. The optimal logistic regression model was inferior to the optimal ML model for predicting SLNM, with an AUC of 0.727. CONCLUSIONS: The CT radiomics showed the potential for accurately predicting SLNM in NSCLC patients. The ML model with dual-region radiomic features has better performance than the logistic regression or single-region models.

Advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a severe malignancy that poses a serious threat to human health. Owing to challenges in early diagnosis, most patients lose the opportunity for radical treatment when diagnosed. Nonetheless, recent advancements in cancer immunotherapy provide new directions for the treatment of HCC. For instance, monoclonal antibodies against immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) such as programmed cell death protein 1/death ligand-1 inhibitors and cytotoxic t-lymphocyte associated antigen-4 significantly improved the prognosis of patients with HCC. However, tumor cells can evade the immune system through various mechanisms. With the rapid development of genetic engineering and molecular biology, various new immunotherapies have been used to treat HCC, including ICIs, chimeric antigen receptor T cells, engineered cytokines, and certain cancer vaccines. This review summarizes the current status, research progress, and future directions of different immunotherapy strategies in the treatment of HCC.

To explore the molecular biological characteristics of lung cancer associated with cystic airspaces (LCCA) and its potential roles on prognosis. A total of 165 LCCAs and 201 non-LCCAs were enrolled in this study. Bulk RNA sequencing was implemented in eight LCCAs and nine non-LCCAs to explore the differentially expressed genes. TCGA data were used to analyze LCCA-specific genes that associated with overall survival (OS). The median age was 60 (IQR 53 to 65) years in LCCA cohort. We found LCCA were predominant in men and had less visceral pleura invasion (VPI) or lympho-vascular invasion (LVI). Moreover, LCCA presented with higher histological heterogeneity. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that patients of age more than 60 and positive VPI had significantly less PFS in LCCA. Cox regression suggested that LCCA, micropapillary subtype proportion and VPI were the independent risk factors for PFS. LCCA had up-regulated pathways associated with EMT, angiogenesis and cell migration. In addition, LCCA displayed higher levels of immunosuppressor infiltration (M2 macrophages, CAFs and MDSCs) and distinct cell death and metabolic patterns. BCR/TCR repertoire analysis revealed less BCR richness, clonality and high-abundance shared clonotypes in LCCA. Finally, Cox regression analysis identified that four cystic-specific genes, KCNK3, NRN1, PARVB and TRHDE-AS1, were associated with OS of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). And cystic-specific risk scores (CSRSs) were calculated to construct a nomogram, which performance well. Our study for the first time indicated significantly distinct molecular biological and immune characteristics between LCCA and non-LCCA, which provide complementary prognostic values in early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Introduction: Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) has become a common option for the treatment of prostate cancer. The aim of our study was to examine whether LRP performed within 12 weeks of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is associated with surgical difficulty or outcomes. Material and methods: A single-institutional retrospective analysis was performed on patients who underwent LRP for incidental prostate cancer after TURP between July 2009 and December 2017. The interval between TURP and LRP was determined and patients with intervals of ≤ 12 weeks were compared to those with intervals of > 12 weeks. Patient characteristics, perioperative, pathological, and postoperative functional outcomes were analyzed to determine statistically significant differences between the 2 groups. Multivariable analyses were performed to determine whether the interval between TURP and LRP was a significant independent predictor of these outcomes. Results: A total of 56 incidental prostate cancer patients detected by TURP were included in this study. No significant differences were detected in estimated blood loss, operative duration, postoperative length of stay, and rate of positive margin, Gleason score upgrading, major complications, incontinence and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) recurrence in patients with a TURP to LRP interval above and below 12 weeks. The TURP to LRP interval was not an independent predictor of outcomes during or after LRP. Conclusions: Our results showed that performing LRP within 12 weeks after TURP does not adversely influence surgical difficulty or outcomes.

Pyrolysis is effective in reducing the volume of solid waste and sludge, and produces less pollutants than incineration and landfill, but the process still suffers from heavy metal pollution. Four types of intercalated-exfoliated modified vermiculite (UIV, DIV, TIV and 3IV) were prepared using urea, dimethylsulfoxide, tributyl phosphate and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as intercalators for the control of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn in municipal sewage sludge (MSL), paper mill sludge (PML), municipal domestic waste (MWA) and aged refuse (AFE). The larger the interlayer spacing of the vermiculite, the more favorable the retention of heavy metals. 3IV was the most effective additive, with an average retention of more than 75 % of all heavy metals at 450 ℃ for the four raw materials. Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn were all at low potential ecological risk (Pr), while Cd was moderate or considerable Pr, and the addition of 3IV reduced the Pr. Distribution of intercalators between vermiculite interlayers was haphazard, and interlayer spacing results were close to those of the experiment (except for tributyl phosphate). The reactive electrons mainly flowed from the Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) of vermiculite flakes to the Lower Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO) of heavy metal chlorides. In contrast, the reactive electrons mostly flowed from the HOMO of heavy metal oxides to the LUMO of vermiculite flakes. Heavy metal oxides were more readily adsorbed on vermiculite flakes than heavy metal chlorides, and the adsorption capacity of Cr and Zn was stronger than that of Cd, Pb and Cu.

BACKGROUND: Occult breast cancer (OBC) has traditionally been considered to be a carcinoma of unknown primary origin with a favorable prognosis and can be treated as stage II-III breast cancer. Due to the small number of cases and limited clinical ex-perience, treatments vary greatly around the world and no standardized treat-ment has yet been established. AIM: To investigate the clinicopathological features, psychological status and prog-nostic features of patients with OBC. METHODS: The clinicopathological data of 33 OBC patients diagnosed and treated in the Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University and Xuzhou Central Hospital from November 2015 to November 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. The psychological status of OBC patients was evaluated by the Self-rating Anxiety Scale and Self-rating Depression Scale. Patients' emotions, stress perception and psychological resilience were evaluated by the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, the Chinese Perceived Stress Scale, and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), respectively. Patient survival was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and survival curves were plotted for analysis with the log-rank test. Univariate and multivariate survival analyses were performed using the Cox regression model. RESULTS: The 33 OBC patients included 32 females and 1 male. Of the 33 patients, 30 (91%) had axillary tumors, 3 (9%) had a neck mass as the primary symptom; 18 (54.5%) had estrogen receptor-positive tumors, 17 (51.5%) had progesterone receptor-positive tumors, and 18 (54.5%) had Her-2-positive tumors; 24 (72.7%) received surgical treatment, including 18 patients who underwent modified radical mastectomy, 1 patient who underwent breast-conserving surgery plus axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), and 5 patients who underwent ALND alone; 12 patients received preoperative neoadjuvant therapy. All 30 patients developed anxiety and depression, with low positive affect scores and high negative affect scores, accompanied by a high stress level and poor psychological resilience. There were no differences in the psychological status of patients according to age, body mass index, or menopausal status. The overall survival and disease-free survival (DFS) of all the patients were 83.3% and 55.7%, respectively. Univariate analysis demonstrated that the initial tumor site (P = 0.021) and node stage (P = 0.020) were factors that may affect patient prognosis. The 5-year DFS rate of OBC patients who received radiotherapy was greater (P < 0.001), while the use of different surgical methods (P = 0.687) had no statistically significant effect on patient outcomes. Multivariate analysis revealed that radiotherapy (P = 0.031) was an independent prognostic factor. Receiving radiotherapy had a significant effect on the CD-RISC score (P = 0.02). CONCLUSION: OBC is a rare breast disease whose diagnosis and treatment are currently controversial. There was no significant difference in the efficacy of other less invasive surgical procedures compared to those of modified radical mastectomy. In addition, radiotherapy can significantly improve patient outcomes. We should pay attention to the psychological state of patients while they receive antitumor therapy.

Taking the floor sandstone of sulfur coal symbiotic coal seam as the research object, the roof fissure water with pH values of 7.48, 4.81 and 2.62 was used as the experimental solution. 10 experimental schemes were designed to measure the compressive strength of the samples under the action of AMD, and the hydrochemical analysis of AMD was conducted. The pore structures of the samples before and after the action of AMD were analyzed. Based on the hydrochemistry and pore structure, the deterioration mechanism of compressive strength of the coal seam floor sandstone under the action of AMD was explained. The results indicated that the compressive strength of the samples decreased with the increasing action time of AMD. The compressive strength decreased with the increment of the porosity. The concentration of H+ ion in AMD was relatively small. Na2O in albite dissolved and reacted with water, leading to an increase in the concentration of Na+ ion. Soluble substances such as MgCl2 and CaSO4 in the pore structure dissolved, leading to an increase in the concentration of Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions. The dissolution of soluble substances and the physical-chemical reactions between solutions and minerals were the essential causes of the continuous deterioration of the compressive strength of the coal seam floor sandstone. The results of this study can provide a theoretical basis for the deterioration of the mechanical properties of the peripheral rock in the roadway of the sulphur coal seam, and can also provide a certain engineering reference for the sulphur coal seam roadway.

The touch dome (TD) keratinocytes are specialized epidermal cells that intimately associate with the light touch sensing Merkel cells (MCs). The TD keratinocytes function as a niche for the MCs and can induce de novo hair follicles upon stimulation; however, how the TD keratinocytes are maintained during homeostasis remains unclear. scRNA-seq identified a specific TD keratinocyte marker, Tenascin-C (TNC). Lineage tracing of Tnc-expressing TD keratinocytes revealed that these cells maintain themselves as an autonomous epidermal compartment and give rise to MCs upon injury. Molecular characterization uncovered that, while the transcriptional and chromatin landscape of the TD keratinocytes is remarkably similar to that of the interfollicular epidermal keratinocytes, it also shares certain molecular signatures with the hair follicle keratinocytes. Our study highlights that the TD keratinocytes in the adult skin have molecular characteristics of keratinocytes of diverse epidermal lineages.

The inadequate quantity of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in cancer cells promptly results in the constrained success of chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Significant efforts made throughout the years; nevertheless, researchers are still facing the great challenge of designing a CDT agent and securing H2O2 supply within the tumor cell. In this study, taking advantage of H2O2 level maintenance mechanism in cancer cells, a nanozyme-based bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) tandem reactor is fabricated to elevate intracellular H2O2 levels, thereby enhancing CDT. In addition, under near-infrared excitation, the upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) loaded into the MOFs can perform photocatalysis and generate hydrogen, which increases cellular susceptibility to radicals induced from H2O2, inhibits cancer cell energy, causes DNA damages and induces tumor cell apoptosis, thus improving CDT therapeutic efficacy synergistically. The proposed nanozyme-based bimetallic MOFs-mediated CDT and UCNPs-mediated hydrogen therapy act as combined therapy with high efficacy and low toxicity.

IMPORTANCE: During the coronavirus disease 2019 epidemic, the Chinese government launched and used a series of nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), including banning social gatherings, wearing face masks, home isolation, and maintaining hand hygiene, to control the disease spread. Whether and how NPIs influence other respiratory viruses in children remain unclear. In this article, we analyzed relative data and found that the number of samples and positive proportion of respiratory viruses decreased significantly compared with that before the epidemic. Clinicians and public health policymakers should pay attention to changes in the epidemic trends and types of respiratory viruses and maintain monitoring of respiratory-related viruses to avoid possible abnormal rebounds and epidemic outbreaks of these viruses.

Antibiotic resistome could be loaded by bioaerosols and escape from wastewater or sludge to atmosphere environments. However, until recently, their profile, mobility, bacterial hosts, and risks in submicron bioaerosols (PM1.0) remain unclear. Here, metagenomic sequencing and assembly were employed to conduct an investigation of antibiotic resistome associated with PM1.0 within and around a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). More subtypes of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) with higher total abundance were found along the upwind-downwind-WWTP transect. ARGs in WWTP-PM1.0 were mainly mediated by plasmids and transposases were the most prevalent mobile genetic elements (MGEs) co-occurring with ARGs. A contig-based analysis indicated that very small proportions (15.32%-19.74%) of ARGs in WWTP-PM1.0 were flanked by MGEs. Proteobacteria was the most dominant host of ARGs. A total of 28 kinds of potential pathogens, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, carried multiple ARG types. Compared to upwind, WWTP and corresponding downwind were characterized by higher PM1.0 resistome risk. This study emphasizes the vital role of WWTPs in discharging PM1.0-loaded ARGs and antibiotic resistant pathogens to air, and indicates the need for active safeguard procedures, such as that employees wear masks and work clothes, covering the main emission sites, and collecting and destroying of bioaerosols.
